House History Signs in Essex, CT

John Pratt Jr - 1732

The Essex Historical Society is proud to offer a House History Sign Program for period Essex houses. The purpose of this program is to enrich our understanding of the Town’s history and to raise awareness of Essex's architecture.

Signs are made by Essex sign painter, Jim Danks. They are oval in shape, measure 12 x 18 inches, with a white background and Essex Green lettering. If you do not know the name or date associated with your house, the Society will provide it. The Society reserves the right to approve the final content of the sign. The purchaser of each sign will also receive a history of the house written by the late Town Historian, Donald Malcarne. The cost of the sign is $175.

Almost 300 Essex Historical Society House signs have been issued to date. They provide a glimpse into the history of the house and the growth of neighborhoods around family ties. The Society maintains a file of histories of Essex houses available for research.
