  • Pratt House 19 West Avenue Essex, Connecticut, 06426 United States (map)

Essex Historical Society is asking for volunteers to help us with an archeological dig that is taking place at Pratt House as part of the Culture Campus improvements funded by the Good to Great Grant from the State of Connecticut.

If you would like to participate, you MUST SIGN UP!

Please read the below about the dig and what may be required of you as a volunteer.

  • Dig days are the week of August 31 including Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Bad weather will delay the project - we will keep you informed based on your sign up day.

  • No experience is necessary, but expect to take direction well from professional archaeologists and field supervisors.

  • Participate during conversations with archaeologists and fellow volunteers.

  • Please be advised that some tasks will involve physical work such as digging, lifting, bending or carrying.

  • Duties may include one or more of these tasks: carefully digging test pits, shaking screens to find objects in the screened dirt, washing objects, tagging and bagging the objects, possible data entry.

  • Dress for the weather in work clothes, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and possibly a hat. Tents provided.

  • Bring a water bottle, snacks and/or lunch, if appropriate.
